Green Day is an American punk rock band that was formed in East Bay, California in 1986 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt. Currently the line-up also consists of drummer Tré Cool, who replaced former drummer John Kiffmeyer in 1990. Originally releasing music on Lookout! Records, Green Day later signed to Reprise Records, with whom they released their major label debut Dookie in 1994. Dookie was an instant critical and commercial success, selling over 10 million copies in the U.S. and going on to reach Diamond certification. The band's next two albums, Insomniac and Nimrod, both went double platinum and their third album, Warning, achieved platinum status. Green Day has won five Grammy Awards, and their stage adaptation of American Idiot was nominated for three Tony Awards and won two. The group has sold more than 85 million records worldwide, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2015.
