Raised by a single mother—a nurse who raised Darius with three sisters and two brothers, the man grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, with a dream of making it as a singer. He only saw his dad before church, who was apparently in a gospel band. Sharing how he grew up poor, Rucker still looks back at his childhood with fond memories. Surrounded by a musical household with an extended family, he was influenced by gospel and soul, singing in choirs and at home.
Darius Rucker made great waves in music as a lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of Hootie & the Blowfish. It all began when Mark Bryan first heard Rucker singing in the shower, while they met at the University of South Carolina. They soon became a duo and started playing R.E.M. covers. Later on, the stars all aligned - meeting their fellow bandmates who'll complete Hootie & the Blowfish, release seven studio albums with several hits on the Hot 100.
In 2001, Rucker was supposed to release his solo debut R&B album "The Return of Mongo Slade" via Atlantic, but contract changes got in the way. The original masters were picked up by Hidden Beach Recordings and released as "Back to Then" in 2002. This marked the start of his solo music career. Later, he signed with Capitol Records Nashville in order to dive right into country music. He then scored a hit single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It."
Since then, he started dominating country music airwaves, and won the CMA New Artist of the Year Award (formerly the Horizon Award). He's the first African American in history to win the title since it was introduced in 1981, and only one of two African Americans who won an award at the CMAs.
As he takes his legendary catalog of hits out for a live spin in the Songs of Summer Tour, be sure to be part of the celebration by booking your tickets now!
